1 Speaking up.
Hello and welcome to this course!
In this course, you are going to learn about human rights, discrimination, social engagement and protest.
Today's question is: What do people protest about?
In this first lesson you are going to:
- talk about reasons why people protest
- find out why people think protesting matters
- create and present your own protest poster
If you need help, you can go to the class forum and ask your question there. You can also answer questions from your classmates.-
1 Let's stand up together.
a) Look at the pictures. What are the people protesting about? Sum up the topics together and explain why the people might protest about them.
-
2 Why does protest matter?
Sophie and Bernd wrote a blog entry explaining why protest matters to them. Read the blog entry and form your own opinion.
-
3 What would you protest?
Design and create a protest poster for a protest you would take part in. Present it to your class and explain in a one-minute presentation what you are protesting about, why you want to protest about it and what needs to change in this area.

✪ ✪ ✪ Do we have to stand up for our rights?
Go online and search for the song "Get up. Stand up." by Bob Marley and the Wailers. Listen to the song. What message do they send with the song? Do you agree with the message? State your opinion. Tell your class about it and ask your classmates about their opinions.
